Michał Pepol

Cellist, arranger, composer. Co-founder of the Royal String Quartet, originator and co-organiser of the Kwartesencja festival in Warsaw and curator of the Klangor festival in Warmia. He started 2023 with the Dotykafonie concert series at the Nowy Teatr International Cultural Centre in Warsaw. 

In 2022, he made a name for himself with a solo album Kora nieskończoności (Agora Music), featuring previously unknown and unreleased recordings by the legendary Kora Jackowska. The album was listed among the 10 best Polish albums of 2022 by “Polityka”, TVN24 and Onet, and brought its author a nomination for the for the 2022 Coryphaeus of Polish Music Award in the Personality of the Year category. 

Michał Pepol created a number of projects, including Dżwięk odnaleziony in collaboration with Paweł Bownik (Nowy Teatr, 2016), Milczenie syren in duet with Magdalena Cielecka (Museum of Modern Art in Warsaw, 2017) and Among Angels (2017) carried out in Puszcza Biała. He composed the score for Markus Öhrn’s play Three Episodes of the Family Life (2021), and he has been performing in Krzysztof Warlikowski’s play Francuzi since 2015. He invited one of the doyennes of Polish music – Sława Przybylska – to create a sound installation Stoimy pod murami getta (Jewish Historical Institute, 2022). 

He was also one of the authors of Ralph Kaminski’s 2021 Fryderyk Award-winning album Kora, a project that saw more than 50 live shows. With the Trimagine trio, he won the second prize and the Czesław Niemen Special Award at the 2019 “New Tradition” Polish Radio Folk Festival for his arrangements. He collaborates with many artists, including Bartek Wąsik, with whom he co-founded the Dwóchgłos duo, as well as Natalia Przybysz, Kuba Krzewiński (Contre DVD, Bołt Records, 2019), Stefan Wesołowski, Patryk Zakrocki, Olga Mysłowska (Leggerezza) and Ensemble Kompopolex. His music could be heard at festivals such as Warsaw Autumn, Nostalgia, Ephemera, Pomada, Enter, Słuchy, EtnoKraków, Tranströmer Days, Szalone Dni Muzyki and Festiwal Prawykonań. 

He is frequently featured in Polish Radio 2; his recitals were recorded by TVP Kultura, for whom he curated the Live Culture series of concerts in 2019. Since 2003, he has been teaching a chamber music class at the Karol Szymanowski Music High School in Warsaw. In 2022, he received an art scholarship of the Capital City of Warsaw.
