Bryce Dessner

A composer, guitarist and curator from Brooklyn. He graduated from the Yale School of Music and is known mainly as a member of the rock band The National. He writes the band’s songs in collaboration with his twin brother Aaron Dessner and vocalist Matt Berninger. Their albums Alligator and Boxer are mentioned among the most important records of the last decade. Apart from that, Bryce is also a founding member of the improvising quartet The Clogs, the founder and artistic director of the MusicNOW Festival and a co-founder of the Brassland label, which has released, among others, albums by Erik Friedlander and Nico Muhly. Bryce has recorded or performed together with a number of the most creative musicians and composers, including: Sufjan Stevens, Bon Iver, Antony Hegarty, Lee Ranaldo (Sonic Youth), Steve Reich, Philip Glass, Nico Muhly and Michael Gordon. Bryce has also composed several commissioned pieces, including O Shut Your Eyes Against the Wind for Bang on a Can All-Stars and two string quartets Aheym and Tenebre for Kronos Quartet. The first of them was performed at Kronos Quartet's concert in Krakow in 2011. On the occasion of the celebration of the Witold Lutoslawski Year, Bryce Dessner will compose a piece inspired by Lutoslawski’s music at the special commission of the National Audiovisual Institute.
