Sacrum Profanum 2025

Portishead

Portishead is a band established in 1991 in Bristol. It was formed by the multi-instrumentalist Geoff Barrow and the singer Beth Gibbons, who were later joined by the guitarist Adrian Utley. The history of the band began with a recording of the soundtrack for the film To Kill A Dead Man. In 1994 they released their debut album Dummy, which met with an enthusiastic response of the audience and critics (including the hit single Glory Box). The next album Portishead (1997) was not as successful as the debut album, but reinforced the strong position of the band on the international music scene.

A year later, after the release of the album Roseland NYC Live, the band members concentrated on their solo projects and reunited only in 2005 to play a concert for the tsunami victims in Asia. In 2008 they released Third – their last album so far.

The members of Portishead like participating in initiatives promoting tolerance and human rights. They recorded, among others, a special song for the Amnesty International and Geoff Barrow was the the music supervisor for Exit Through the Gift Shop, which was the debut of the famous British graffiti artist Banksy as a film director.

The guitarist Adrian Utley is already familiar to the Krakow audience. Two years ago he performed at the Sacrum Profanum Festival in the final concert Reich 75, and in 2011 he was also a guest of the Misteria Paschalia Festival, where he performed the emotional soundtrack for the silent film The Passion of Joan of Arc together with Will Gregory from Goldfrapp.

Now the members of Portishead are working on their fourth studio album.
