Sacrum Profanum 2024

Barbara Kinga Majewska

Barbara Kinga Majewska is a classically trained musician specialising in contemporary vocal music, composer and author of sound installations. At this year’s Sacrum Profanum she will debut as a singer-songwriter.

Majewska explores the agency of the human voice in an intermedia approach (live performance, sound installation, text). Reaching beyond the audible, her practice focuses on the non-musical contexts of singing that amplify the voice throughout the canon of the Western musical tradition. In her works, Majewska aims at inherited fantasies surrounding the act of singing and balances on the edge where the voice itself becomes a song.

A graduate of Hochschule für Musik in Detmold, Royal Academy of Music in Stockholm and Chopin University of Music in Warsaw. She is the author of sound installations (National Museum in Warsaw, Zachęta National Gallery in Warsaw, Museum der Moderne Salzburg, Polish National Radio Symphony Orchestra) and music for performances (Kunsthaus Graz, Teatr Studio, Nowy Teatr). Her works have been shown at Galerie Barbara Thumm Berlin (New Viewings #36), Galeria Wschód (solo exhibition Little Solfège), House of Contemporary Culture Marres and Muzeum Sztuki in Łódź (trio Codex Subpartum with Konrad Smoleński and Michał Libera).

She has performed at the Museum of Modern Art in Warsaw, National Museum in Warsaw, Zachęta National Gallery in Warsaw, Ujazdowski Castle Center for Contemporary Art, Polin Museum, National Opera, and Polish Radio Studios. She is a regular guest at such festivals as Donaueschinger Musiktage, Warsaw Autumn, Unsound, Sacrum Profanum, Malta Festival.
