Referring directly to the neighbourhood, in the coming years we want to bring the music of Eastern European countries closer to our audiences. After last year’s celebration of the centenary of Polish independence, we want to share this common joy with Lithuania, which celebrated its anniversary alongside us. The programme will feature six concerts presenting the achievements of Lithuanian composers, including Egidija Medekšaitė, Justė Janulytė and Rytis Mažulis, in a diverse way that transcends generational boundaries.

LITHUANIAN POST-MINIMALISM is one of these. At the same time, it is also a reference to the 2017 Romanian Spectralism programme and yet another event presenting the most characteristic style from a unique, national perspective. Lithuania is famous for its often radical minimalists, who use static form – like Justė Janulytė, while others emphasise sound and texture – like Egidija Medekšaitė, use repetition – like Antanas Kučinskas, Rita Mačiliūnaitė; or build dense, drone masses of sound on the foundation of minimalism – like Dominykas Digimas, Lina Lapelytė, and Rūta Vitkauskaitė. Andrius Arutiunian, on the other hand, refers to the ASMR phenomenon, which gained notoriety on the internet – a kind of fetishization of sounds on the basis of relaxing sounds that give pleasure to the listeners. The concert will be performed by the Krakow-based Spółdzielnia Muzyczna contemporary ensemble, the Festival’s ensemble-in-residence.
