Even now, in the 21st century, the male form is seen as the default. Women are consistently underrepresented in most aspects of our lives including politics, academia and culture. Even seemingly neutral language can be deceptive, and we frequently need reminding that not everyone we read about is male, leading to debates whether we should write “women composers” or “female composers” or, indeed, whether we need to be making this distinction at all. This festival features 54 male forms versus just 43 female ones. This project is the initiative of six composers and five performers, all of them women, which finally brings balance.
