Sacrum Profanum 2023

Discussions and lessons

2016-09-26

Sacrum Profanum means business. When, in the middle of June, we brought you the happy news in the form of the renewed festivals programme, we also announced some mysterious activities, complementing the exciting music experiences. Now it is the time to reveal the list – and it is an extensive one. Club music and serious discussions, vocal and instrumental workshops, as well as film screenings, lectures and meetings with artists. From theory to practice, from listening to becoming a part of events – Sacrum Profanum brings the world of music closer to the audience, disenchants it and – poof – opens the hermetic can. It turns out that there is nothing scary about it and the new classical music is just a part of reality, and without it our knowledge of contemporary world would not be complete. And after all, we do not want to live without being aware.

We are starting the events on the 1st of October with one of three discussions under auspices of Fragile magazine – the first one will be devoted to music journalism, while the following ones on the 5th and 8th of October will raise the issues of music theory, cognition and improvisation. The first day will also see the story of the Bedroom Community collective (celebrating its 10th birthday in Krakow) and the club opening of the Sacrum Profanum festival at W Remoncie, with music by Piotr Figiel, John Lake and duy gebord. The following days will feature vocal workshop with Barbara Kinga Majewska (Małopolska Garden, 2.10, with mandatory registration at warsztaty@biurofestiwalowe.pl), discussions with Glissando magazine (two panels on the 2nd and 3rd of October, devoted to experimental music and women in contemporary and electronic music), lectures about the achievements of three great composers of the 20th century – Stockhausen, Boulez and Berio (2.10), and evolution of the opera (6.10), meetings with festival artists: Agata Zubel and Marcin Stańczyk, Reinhold Friedel and Kasper T. Toeplitz, as well as the authors of Folie à Deux (the 3th, 4th and 6th of October). The programme also includes screenings of films about Maja Ratkje and the contemporary Polish musical avant-garde , vocal workshop with Ratkje (registration for participants at warsztaty@biurofestiwalowe.pl) and preparing a piano with the legendary contemporary pianist, Stephen Drury, a curator’s tour of Anna Zaradny’s Rondo denoting circle exhibition in the Bunker of Art gallery, and the after party at W Remoncie, ending this year’s edition of Sacrum Profanum with Mirt, A.N.R.S. i FOQL.

The quality will be guaranteed by talking heads: Among the hosts, you will see Monika Pasiecznik, Iza Smelczyńska, Jan Topolski, Tomasz Gregorczyk and Rafał Mazur, as well as guests: Dorota Kozińska, Justyna Stasiowska, Adam Suprynowicz, Krzysztof Szwajgier, Filip Szałasek and others.

The festival is more than just music. It is all about spending time together, celebrating and being open towards new experiences. It is what the new Sacrum Profanum is all about – it invites you to grow with the festival, allowing you to complement the aesthetic experiences with intellectual superstructure. It entertains, but does not spoil. It teaches, but is not patronising. Let us take you on an adventure!
