Sacrum Profanum 2023

Multidimensional Sacrum Profanum - new positions in the programme!

2016-08-25

In the multimedia world, the reception of art with just one sense becomes sort of an experiment. The variety of stimuli and the information noise flooding us from all sides make us feel hungry for experiences. Of course, Sacrum Profanum cannot let that hunger go unsatisfied, and thus the festival offers events which go beyond the traditional scope of a concert.

Apart from the Rondo denoting Circle exhibition, announced on the 16th of June (17.09 - 11.12), prepared in collaboration with the Bunker of Art, presenting works by Anna Zaradny, curator of the Musica Genera - the first festival in Independent Poland devoted to improvisation and experimentation, we will hear the artist in the role of an instrumentalist - if we can use the term to describe someone who uses a modern instrument - such as the computer - to create. On Friday, the 7th of October at 7:00 p.m. at the ICE Kraków Congress Centre, Anna Zaradny - composer, visual and audio artist - will perform alongside Robert Piotrowicz and Jérôme Noetinger in a presentation of the Sono Genera programme - a fusion of electroacoustic music, improvisation and sound art.

Piotrowicz, the former of the listed musicians, is not only one of the originators of the festival and founders of the Musica Genera label, a distinguished composer and author of sound installations, but also a virtuoso of modular synthesisers, famous for his emotional sound performances. His creations draw upon electro-acoustic music, however it develops towards improvisation, full of dynamic tensions. Noetinger, a film creator from Marseille, publisher and instrumentalist, performs music, which can be described only as electroacoustic controlled chaos, and his favourite instruments are voice recorder and electronic devices, which allow him to manipulate the materials he records or finds on tapes. The energy, which accompanies his live performances inspires both the artists he performs with, as well as the audience, which ensures that his performance alongside two great personalities of Polish contemporary music scene will not go unnoticed. This will be an open concert.

On Saturday, the 8th of October at 6:00 p.m. in the Theatre Hall of the ICE Kraków Congress Centre we are going to see a multimedia co-production of the Sacrum Profanum Festival and Kijora Film production company, equalising various disciplines of art. We are going to present the Opera About Poland, with music by Artur Zagajewski, illustrated by fragments of documentaries by Piotr Stasik. Stasik, together with Piotr Gruszczyński, also wrote the libretto of this unique show, which uses fragments of films and radio broadcasts mixed live on stage, as well as recitations. A broad range of sound impressions and film fragments is bathed in the dark, predatory music, building a critical at times and affectionate image of contemporary Poland. In this opera, the creators decided not to use voice - we will feel the lack of singing to gain a better understanding of the void - an inseparable aspect of the reality described by the opera. The authors raise several issues and ask questions about us, Poles, and our attitude towards the country, but as they themselves stated, “we are not going to find any simple answers there. In principle, the music, the images and the words simply provide space for contemplation and reflection, searching for archetypes, symbols and metaphysics, while the audience has to become a co-creator of the show, and look for their own story of Poland”.

The music, written by Zagajewski, will be performed by a specially selected ensemble (featuring Wojciech Błażejczyk aand Michał Górczyński), led by Maciej Koczur, and the recitations will be performed by Wojciech Kalarus. The choreography of the Opera About Poland was created by Dominika Knapik. The opera is co-financed by the Polish Film Institute and Silesia Film.

The festival is organised by the City of Krakow and Krakow Festival Office. The project was financed from the funds of the Minister of Culture and National Heritage.
