Accompanying events

2018-08-31

Sacrum Profanum is more than just concerts! As every year, the main programme of the festival is complemented by a broad range of accompanying events that will offer something interesting to every visitor. We want to offer you meetings, debates, performances, interviews with musicians, workshops and even yoga classes. Join us!

September 2 (Sunday), 11:30 a.m. (yoga), 12:30 p.m. (concert) / Krakow Park
MOON2 – WARM-UP BEFORE THE SACRUM PROFANUM FESTIVAL

The warm-up before the festival emotions will begin on the 2nd of September. A metaphorical warm-up – a concert of MOON2, but also a real one – during yoga classes with Denis Kolokol. Imagine that you can touch the sound. MOON2 is a virtual world in which movement becomes sound. Therefore, playing the instrument resembles a dance. Each concert of the band is not only a sound experience, but also an intense visual experience – each gesture of the performer is recorded with the help of a camera/motion controller and influences electronic sounds. Electronic sounds controlled by the movement of the performer’s body combined with the sound of drums and bass guitars create a unique blend – algorithmic space rock that is out of this world.

Before the concert, we would like to invite you to yoga classes, which will be conducted by Denis Kolokol from MOON2. After this warm-up, it will not only be easier for you to follow the sound consequences of the movements during the concert, but also to try standing in front of the motion controller after the concert and... move the sounds! Finally, we invite you to interact with this unique system/instrument.

September 12 (Wednesday), 5:00 p.m. / Arteteka
“Fragile: Doing by Not Doing” conversation
With the development of sound recording and reproduction technology, forms of music creation emerged in the 20th century, drawing benefits from chance, unforeseen circumstances and spontaneous, unprepared action. At present, the act of presenting music does not require either the preparation of a piece or the participation of live musicians. Music festivals feature installations enabling random passers-by to create music pieces and events, and within the genre of field recordings audiosphere recordings are created, which are “works” without a composer. Who creates music when there is no artist? Maybe nobody creates it, and yet it comes into being? Or maybe it’s still possible that you don’t have to create it at all, just listen to it?
Speakers: Rafał Mazur, Beniamin Głuszek, Marcin Barski
Host: Tomasz Gregorczyk

September 12 (Wednesday), 6:30 pm / Museum of Urban Engineering
LEM: BIRTHDAY AT THE SACRUM PROFANUM FESTIVAL

September 13 (Thursday), 5:00 p.m / Spółdzielnia Muzyczna' Headquarters
Spółdzielnia Muzyczna music installation: Gromadzka 46#TrashMusic is an interactive installation by Wojciech Błażejczyk that brings sound into the space of the Spółdzielnia Muzyczna’s headquarters. The elements of rooms and object-phones – worn out everyday objects, used as instruments, will be used as the sources of sound. Waste sounds and sound waste generated by musicians of Spółdzielnia Muzyczna and the Hashtag Ensemble, as well as the public, moving freely around the rooms, will be processed live and form a partly composed, partly unpredictable musical structure – the audio representation of the space.

September 14 (Friday), 5:00 p.m. / Arteteka
Fragile: “Play it again, Sam?” –A conversation
Is jazz still alive or is it long dead? Once Afro-American rhythms and improvisation brought about a musical revolution. Does the music still have anything to offer to the world 101 years after the release of the first jazz album? Or maybe it is slowly turning classical and becoming a kind of early music? How do the avant-garde trends in jazz development compare to the achievements of contemporary and experimental music? Do the continuators of the subversive genres of improvised music of the 1960s still deserve to be called musical rebels? In short, why should fans of contemporary and experimental music still listen to jazz and improvised music?
Speakers: Daniel Brożek, Piotr Tkacz, Wacław Zimpel
Host: Tomasz Gregorczyk

September 15 (Saturday), 4:00 p.m. / ICE Kraków – Kinnarps Coworking Garden
“Glissando” conversation: Radio, EMNCPTN and Glissando#35
If we try to understand radio broadcasting in a broader sense – as audio communication using radio waves – then the takeover of the Austrian military radio station in Krakow, which took place on the 4th of November 1918 can be considered the starting point of Polish radio broadcasting. In issue #35, planned for the autumn of 2018, we celebrate the centenary of radio in Poland! We look at the radio in institutional and social terms, taking a closer look at the history of the radio as an institution and as a medium. The categories of independence, emancipation and freedom thus play an important role in our issue, which lines up with the programme of the 2018 Sacrum Profanum Festival. We are interested in the relationship between the medium and the authorities, looking at the radio as a technology of governance and a “modern art of sound warfare” used by various centres of power, as well as in various actions aimed at combating the status quo. We map the centres of independent and experimental radio – in the air, in galleries, on the Internet. Radio art (radio art / transmission art) occupies a special place in our story – a hybrid created on the borderline between theatre, experimental music and the art of sound. Moving between the beginnings of radio broadcasting and the present day, we propose the media archaeology of radio as a medium which has been constantly shaping reality for a hundred years now.
Speakers: Antoni Michnik, Justyna Stasiowska (Glissando)
Host: Jan Topolski

September 15 (Saturday), 1:00 p.m. / Spółdzielnia Ogniwo

Registration required

September 16 (Sunday), 12:00 / Arteteka Interview with Paulina Owczarek and Michael Wertmüler
open meeting
For millennia, the elements of composition and improvisation have been in constant conflict in the history of music. Their relations and proportions influence not only the final shape of the sound stream, but also the attitude of the artists and the audience. We have a different approach to structured improvisation, free improv, free composition, and to graphic or conventional scores. This year’s edition of the Sacrum Profanum Festival features many interesting performances from the borderland of these forms: Fire! Orchestra, led by Mats Gustafsson, will play Schaeffer and Penderecki, Kasper T. Toeplitz will follow the guidelines presented by Éliane Radigue, and Ensemble Musikfabrik, led by Peter Brötzmann, will play works by Anthony Braxton and Michael Wertmüller.

Above all, however, we will conduct an interview with two musicians who are particularly experienced in this area, on the 16th of September at high noon in Arteteka. Paulina Owczarek is a saxophonist from Krakow, a member of the Institute of Intuition and founder of the Krakow Improvisers Orchestra. She is a member of saxophone bands: samBar (baritone duo) and the classic Saksofonarium quartet, as well as the Nowe Nowe duo and HiQ – an audio-visual band. Michael Wertmüller is a Swiss drummer and composer, a student of Mischa Mengelberg and Dieter Schnell, among others. At the festival, his work – antagonisme contrôlé for saxophone, drums, bass guitar and band (2013-14) – will be performed by Peter Brötzmann, Lucas Niggli and Marino Pliakas. The interview will take the form of an open, public meeting, discreetly moderated by the workshop leaders, where the workshop participants will have priority in asking questions. Then we will divide the audio recording in order to write it down and edit it, and together we will polish the material and lead to a successful publication on the above-mentioned web pages.
Speakers: Paulina Owczarek, Michael Wertmüller
Host: Tomasz Gregorczyk (“Fragile”) and Jan Topolski (“Glissando”)
