Sacrum Profanum: Single Player and Child-friendly

2018-06-01
Before we announce the Multi mode as a full programme of the Sacrum Profanum Festival, we present the programme of two streams: Single Player and SP-Child-friendly.

As part of the Single Player series, we have prepared three solo concerts – prepared by mentor artists who invite you to get to know their music disciplines. “One musician” will be presented at concerts in Cricoteka with the greatest concentration and intimate group.

Mats Gustafsson is a veteran of the Swedish and European free jazz and free improvisation scene, co-creating countless bands, including first of all the Thing and Fire! His solo concert for the acoustic saxophone will be a tribute to Bengt Nordström. He will play on a plastic Grafton-type alto saxophone, used by Charlie Parker, Ornette Coleman and Bengt.

In the case of Witold Szalonek, interest in sound meant an affirmation of all of his physiology. The triptych about Medusa – a mythological creature with snake hair – is almost illustrative music. Its part is The Head of Medusa for the straight flute. Dominik Strycharski actively promotes this instrument. This is the artist’s second project, in which he adds his own answer in the SPIRIT of the original (the first was Louis Andriessen’s Melodies) to the original work, which develops a particular compositional or performance technique.

Kasper T. Toeplitz returns to the festival, this time as a performer. Toeplitz was the one who persuaded the pioneer of electronic music to write the first piece for the instrument. Éliane Radigue, the creator of deep minimalism, started creating instrumental music for specific performers at the end of the 1950s, after half a century of creative work with synthesisers. Elemental II is the second piece of this type, or rather the second version of the first, written for electric bass at Toeplitz’s repeated requests. A composition for deep listening.

The child-friendly propositions will reach not only adult audiences, but also younger ones. Events marked :) are distinguished by unusual, visually attractive and technically interesting instruments and a participative concert formula, for example in the form of a concert walk or musical theatre. Child-friendly does not mean not available to adults – on the contrary, come in crowds, but we also encourage you to bring your children, younger siblings or nieces and nephews, because they will certainly find themselves at these events.

As every year, we could not give up a series of events addressed to children, specially created for the needs and perceptive abilities of children aged from 1 to 3 years and their relatives. This year, it is the Polish production of the Children’s Art Centre in Poznań – the play Close, directed by Alicja Morawska-Rubczak with music by Wacław Zimpel, which he will perform live. Two dancers reveal to the audience a world of magical bonds that eternally unite people. Closeness – me, you, us – family. On the round stage – in the circle of life and community – stands a matryoshka, a symbol of motherhood, but at the same time an object hiding a lot of surprises. Come closer, see, touch, feel. Our stories, hidden in one another, are waiting to be discovered. Close is a spectacle about building relationships, about parenthood and all the meanings it brings with it. In the description of the concert, we read, the child, as the centre of the world, made up of particles of both parents, the mystery of life, which we are still discovering.

The Otheroom is a ritual – the audience enters a place where something important happens, but still with an unknown purpose. Everything is in motion – objects, musicians, dancers, but also the audience, whose direct involvement is necessary to carry out this ritual. Each of the participants, moving or being moved within the performance space, creates a completely unique spatial version of the composition, giving it a concrete and closed form. This form of music presentation, which does not assume a static and sitting reception, is a great alternative to the traditional layout of a stage/audio.

Aeolian is a composition commissioned by the Red Note Ensemble from three artists – the composer Mai S.K. Ratkje, visual artist Kathy Hinde and accordionist Andreas Borregaard. The work is performed on traditional instruments and those powered by air, constructed and designed by Hinde specifically for this project. Many of them use various sizes of bellows or balloons that slowly release air – together they create a spatial sound and visual installation, which certainly attracts the attention of the kids as well. Additionally, music composed by Ratkje practically transports us to the fairy-tale world of children’s references and associations.

PLEASE NOTE: Admission to the Medusa and The Element concerts is free of charge.

We would like to remind you that this year’s 16th edition of the Sacrum Profanum Festival will begin on September 11th and will last for 7 days. The City of Krakow and the Krakow Festival Office cordially invite everybody to enjoy the Festival.
