Lucia Dlugoszewski

She was born in Detroit to a family of Polish immigrants. In the 1950s she moved to New York, where she stayed till the end of her life. She took piano lessons from Grete Sultan, analysis from Felix Salzer and composition from Edgard Varèse. She started composing in New York. In 1977 she became the first woman to win the Koussevitzky Prizefor Fire Fragile Flight for 17 instruments.

Dlugoszewska’s music is distinguished by the use of silence and mild, suppressed sounds, which is unusual for music played on percussion instruments. The artist stimulated her work with the construction of new instruments, which allowed her to create "sound possibilities deprived of ego.”

Długoszewski’s compositions were recorded for numerous labels including Nonesuch Records, Folkways and CRI.
