Marc Minkowski

He studied the basson and then conducting under Charles Bruck at the Pierre Monteux Memorial School in the USA. In 1982 he founded Les Musiciens du Louvre orchestra (based in Grenoble since 1996), specialising in the interpretation of French Baroque music (Lully, Rameau, Charpentier, Maras), along with the works of Monteverdi, Handel, Gluck, Mozart and Offenbach. Les Musiciens du Louvre perform on a regular basis at the most important theatres and opera houses in France (Opéra de Paris, Opéra de Lyon, Châtelet, Théâtre des Champs-Elysées, festivals in Aix-en-Provence and Beaune), as well as leading European musical centres (London, Amsterdam, Madrid, Vienna, Salzburg, and others). Minkowski is considered to be one of the most eminent conductors of his generation; an excellent interpreter of Mozart’s operatic works. Some of his best interpretations of the Austrian master’s works include Idomeneo in Opéra de Paris, The Abduction from the Seraglio (with the Salzburg Mozarteum Orchestra) at the Festival in Salzburg, The Marriage of Figaro (with the Mahler Chamber Orchestra) at the Festival d’Aix-en-Provence, in Baden-Baden and Tokyo, and The Magic Flute in Montpellier, Bochum and Opéra de Paris. Minkowski’s wide repertoire ranges from the Baroque to contemporary music. He is fond of less known composers, such as Mondonville, and underestimated ones, such as Offenbach. Recently he has turned to large symphonic works. Along with Haydn, Beethoven, Schubert and Brahms, he holds French masters, such as Berlioz, Bizet, Chausson, Fauré and Boulanger, in high esteem. Over the last few years Marc Minkowski has been regular guest at the biggest concert halls around the world and some of the most prestigious musical festivals. He has worked together with the Mahler Chamber Orchestra, Berlin Philharmoniker, Orchestre National de France, City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France, Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra, Orchestre de Paris, Dresden Staatskapelle, and others. He has recorded for Erato, EMI and Archiv Produktion. At present he records under contract with the French Naïve label.
