Leszek Możdżer

He studied the piano at the Academy of Music in Gdańsk. In 1993 he was awarded an individual honourable mention in the “Jazz Juniors” Contest. The following year he took first place in the International Jazz Improvisation Contest in Katowice. Since then he has worked with the most renowned Polish jazz musicians, including Tomasz Stańko, Janusz Muniak, Michał Urbaniak, Piotr Wojtasik, Adam Pierończyk, Henryk Miśkiewicz and Anna Maria Jopek. He has also collaborated with film music composers, such as Zbigniew Preisner (e.g. Requiem dla mojego przyjaciela, 10 łatwych utworów na fortepian) and Jan Kaczmarek (e.g. recording of the Oscar-winning soundtrack to Finding Neverland). Możdżer is considered to be one of the most outstanding jazz musicians: a bold explorer and original composer with his personal language of sounds. He is composer of the music to the documentry Pub 700, featuring himself (directed by Sylwester Latkowski), and to the film Nienasycenie (directed by Wiktor Grodecki). Particularly worth mentioning are his theatre performances: Hair – Love, rock musical (Muzyczny Theatre in Gdynia), Tango z Lady M. (Polish Dance Theatre in Poznań), Psychosis 4.48 (Düsseldorf) and Rewizor (Dramatyczny Theatre in Warsaw). He is the author of the music to the Mandarynki i pomarańcze performance to Tuwim’s poems (Operetka Wrocławska), trans-opera Midsummer Night’s Dream (Muzyczny Theatre in Gdynia) and the musical Scat (Capitol Theatre in Wrocław). He has performed in most European countries, the USA, Canada, Brazil, Uruguay, Argentina and Chile. The concert for two pianos with Adam Makowicz in Carnegie Hall released in 2004 and his solo album Piano won a double “Platinum Record” award, similarly his original project The Time released in 2005 by Outside Music label, which he recorded in trio with Lars Danielsson and Zohar Fresco. Its continuation – the album Between us and the Light – was released the following year. In 2007 the album Pasodoble came out, which was recorded as a duet together with Lars Danielsson for the German ACT record label. Możdżer has received numerous awards, including “Fryderyk” (1998), “Paszport Polityki” (2004) and “Wielka Nagroda Fundacji Kultury” (2006). He is a frequent winner in surveys carried out among the readers of Jazz Forum magazine in the “Piano” category and two-time winner in the “Musician of the Year” category (1995 and 1996).
