Aleksander Nowak

b. 1979, studied composition with Aleksander Lasoń at The Karol Szymanowski Academy of Music in Katowice, Poland and with Steve Rouse at the University of Louisville, USA. Currently he is employed at the Composition and Theory Chair at the Academy of Music in Katowice. He teaches i.e. Composition and Orchestration. In 2010 he obtained a doctorate, and in 2016 habilitation.

Aleksander Nowak composes instrumental and vocal-instrumental music commissioned by renowned soloists, ensembles and institutions. His works have been performed by e.g. Ricardo Gallen, Eugeniusz Knapik, Urszula Kryger, Łukasz Kuropaczewski, Piotr Pławner, Piotr Sałajczyk, Agata Szymczewska, Alarm Will Sound, CELLONET Group, Lasoń Ensemble, The London Sinfonietta, Chamber Philharmony Pardubice, Kwartludium, The Silesian Quartet, AUKSO Chamber Orchestra, Elbląg Chamber Orchestra, New Music Orchestra, National Symphony Orchestra in Warsaw, Szczecin Philharmony, Choir and Orchestra of the Silesian Philharmonics and the Polish National Radio Symphony Orchestra in Katowice.

Important part of his work is music associated with opera. In 2009 and 2010 Polish National Opera House in Warsaw staged his chamber opera Sudden Rain directed by Maja Kleczewska, the Warsaw Autumn Festival in 2012 presented the quasi-drama Spoon River for solo voices and video, created with Adam Dudek, and in March 2015 the premiere of Space Opera to the libretto by Bulgarian writer Georgi Gospodinov, directed by Ewelina Pietrowiak, took place at the S.Moniuszko Grand Theatre in Poznań.

Recordings of his compositions can be found on two monographic CDs: “Fiddler’s Green” published by Polish Radio Katowice in 2009, and “3x4+8” published by CD ACCORD Edition in 2012, as well as on albums by renown artists such as TWOgether Duo („Satin”, Sarton Records, 2013) or Agata Szymczewska („Modern Soul”, CD Accord, 2016). Since 2008 his works have been published by Polish Music Edition (PWM).

He is a laureate of e.g. "Cultural Guarantee Award 2010", "Młoda Polska" Scholarship, and Moritz von Bomhard Fellowship.

Since 2011 he has been the president of the Silesian branch of Polish Composers' Union. He coordinates festivals such as "Silesian Contemporary Music Days" and "Brand-New Music".
